Fossil finds and geological discoveries

Hallstatt periodSome of the most interesting archaeological sites on earth can be found in Hallstatt.

You will encounter a time period spanning around 250 million years. Here, you will get comprehensive information about the prehistoric Hallstatt burial ground where around 5,000 people were buried in the period between 1,000 and 500 BC.

The abundance of the burial objects was so important that the early Iron Age became known throughout the world as the “Hallstatt period”. Since then, Hallstatt culture has become a clear-cut term.

Every year, the archaeologists at the Natural History Museum in Vienna continue their digging and research in the Hallstatt mountain valley and in the salt mine.

You can visit some of the finds in the Hallstatt Museum: all these finds are on loan from the Natural History Museum in Vienna.
