7,000 years of salt culture

The entry to the oldest salt mine in the world is located above Hallstatt’s enchanting houses. This is the gateway to a journey into the history of mankind.

Inside the salt mine and at the burial ground before it Archaeologists have so far discovered evidence of a salt culture dating back over 7,000 years. The most important amongst these pieces of evidence are the “man in the salt”, the oldest wooden staircase in the world, and the discovery of over 1,500 graves.

When you consider these sensational finds, it is hardly surprising that the early Iron Age (800 to 400 BC) has gone down in many history books as the “Hallstatt period” and that the region has been awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt-Dachstein-Salzkammergut.

The best thing about it is that you can experience the journey through time by foot on the Hallstatt World Heritage trail with an expert guide. Every Sunday at 2 p.m. and every Tuesday at 9 a.m., the trail takes you into the Hallstatt mountain valley and in to the prehistoric burial ground.
