Farming in the Salzkammergut has always presented farmers with a great challenge. For example, cows and sheep have always been driven to the mountain pastures during the summer. The fields in the valley are used for haymaking, hence guaranteeing feed for the animals during the winter.

It is for this reason that there are still numerous mountain pastures around the Dachstein which are famed between mid-June and mid-September.
