Hiking Holiday P05

Hiking on the trail of the “WHITE GOLD”

The oldest salt mine in the world is located in Hallstatt. Salt has been mined here for 7,000 years. A 40-kilometre long saline pipeline made from tree trunks was constructed from Hallstatt to Ebensee back in 1607.

SalzweltenThe summer is the best time of year to take a trip into the “white world”.
We are not talking about the glacier; instead, we are talking about the oldest salt mine in the world. Salt has been mined in Hallstatt for about 7,000 years. The region is accordingly rich in archaeological finds. “On the trail of the white gold”, you are accompanied by a qualified team which tells you more about how their forefathers lived. The experience above ground is no less impressive if you check out the town with its museums and its lakes. You are guaranteed to experience more on this trip than just rest and nature!

Salzbergbahn
Your trail offers you:

• Welcome by your host with an original hiking mug and information
about events
• Day trips including snack, Salzberg cable car and guided tour of the salt
mine, boat trip, visit to the charnel house, and Hallstatt Museum
• And: information folder and recommended tours
• Memento, inclusive programme for Hiking Friends, etc.

Brine Pipeline Trail
ITINERARY, DAY 1:

Salt mine
Get into the mood for the Hallstatt mountain valley environs. Take the car to Steeg, and hike along the east shore hiking path as far as Obertraun (approx. 3 hours). Return by boat, which stops off in Hallstatt. Enjoy your view from the lake of the World Cultural Heritage site of Hallstatt. You can then explore the delightful “little cultural town”, which nestles between water and cliffs. Taking a tour of the town, you really should take time to
visit the world-famous charnel house, Hallstatt Museum and the excavation site in the Janu sports shop. The programme is rounded off with a snack.
